I am an Ocean Engineer with over six years experience as a Slocum Glider pilot. Prior to becoming a glider pilot I worked in consulting in ports and coastal infrastructure and have additional experience in marine construction.

Coordinating field data collection for ocean physics, marine geology, fisheries ecology, and biogeochemical investigations. Primarily dealing with instrumentation that is deployed in the ocean and recovered at a later time. Overseeing maintenance and calibration of $7.5M of oceanographic equipment. Managing and directing commercial projects. Leading fieldwork expeditions. Developing Ocean Deployments team members.

Oceanographic Instrumentation Engineer

Wellington New Zealand, 8/2021 - Ongoing

Maintaining and running the NIWA Slocum Glider fleet to conduct ocean observations around New Zealand and beyond. Deploying coastal moorings around New Zealand.

Principal Slocum Glider Pilot

Davis California USA, 6/2017 - 12/2021

Maintaining G2 Slocum Glider Storm Petrel. Integration and testing of new sensors. Designing and optimizing missions. Vehicle deployment, monitoring, and recovery. Managing and reviewing data. Modeling vehicle flight. Training new operators. Extending vehicle capability outside of its original design (e.g. for under-ice work). Missions include regular environmental monitoring in Lake Tahoe (USA), study of Lake Geneva (Switzerland/France) gyre, radiatively driven convection in Lake Superior (USA), and ice-ocean interaction in Terra Nova Bay Polynya Antarctica. Planning for fleet expansion.

Processing and evaluating vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data to detect undesired outflow from the Shasta Dam temperature control device. Contributing to a report to be presented to dam managers.

Part of the Maritime team under the Australasia Transport group. Port and marine infrastructure design and planning. Working with urban planners, transportation engineers, traffic engineers, economists and stakeholders (including Aboriginal groups, tourism interest groups, oil and gas operators, the fisheries industry, local and state government, and port authorities) to develop master plans for port and ferry infrastructure. Due diligence for a major port infrastructure transaction.
